Rolfe graduated from the University of Sydney in 1963 and worked in practice in Australia and U.K. In 1967 commenced a PhD in Degenerative Arthropathies in Domestic animals. On completion of his PhD in 1972 commenced as a lecturer in Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales. Taught pathology to Medical and Science students. In 1995 was appointed Professor in the School of Pathology and is now a Visiting and Emeritus Professor at UNSW. Author of 150 publications of which 100 are major primary referred publications, 20 are chapters of Books and the rest are minor reviewed articles.
Rolfe serves on the editorial boards of 3 international journals one of which is VCOT as well as being a referee for 6 other journals and for major research funding bodies e.g. ARC and NH &MRC.
He has been a chairman / president for a number of large international and national conferences e.g. World Biomaterial Congress in 2004(2500 delegates).
Rolfe is considered an International and national authority on tissue reactions to medical devices and their component materials. Served as the pathologist on Therapeutic Device Evaluation Committee and its many sub-panels for the federal minister of Health for 10 years.

Consultant to companies developing medical devices in particular cardiovascular and orthopaedic devices; first Australian to be awarded the Fellow of Biomaterial Science and Engineering.
Since 1976 has been involved in histopathological diagnosis of diseases in companion animals through Bruce Duff Laboratories and Vetnostics. He is considered a reference point for difficult skeletal cases in Australia.
